(1) Understand “who” you are speaking to -
Ask yourself who you are speaking to. You want to get very clear on your audience. What are their interests, beliefs, values, etc. What makes them unique and what do they share in common with others.
(2) Understand “what” you wish to communicate-
The best way I know of to answer this question is to determine a ‘measurable criteria’ for your outcome. In other words, how will you know when you have successfully communicated your message to you audience.
(3) Understand “how” you can best get your message across-
Choose your verbal and nonverbal language with you audience in mind. What types of words and phrases will they likely react to best.
(4) Understand “where” you will be speaking-
I highly recommend you check out the room you’ll be presenting in and even practicing in it if you can. Check the availability of audio and visual tools and ensure the location is practical for your purposes.
(5) Understand “why” your audience should listen to you-
Master public speakers are also masters in the art of persuasion. Part of your job is to “persuade” your audience to hear you out. Why should your audience listen to you? What will they be missing out on if they don’t?
