The fear of speaking in front of a group of people is one of the most common fears there is. The majority of people suffer from this fear to some degree. This is a well-known fact, and even school children suffer from this. Think back to when you were in school and you knew you had to give an oral report, you were more than likely a bundle of nerves the night before your report was do, and you sat the entire day dreading the moment when the teacher would call your name.
Some folks learn to overcome some of that anxiety, and some folks never learn to come to terms with these fears. The real problem is that the fear of public speaking is like all other fears, we must confront it before we can conquer it. The way to confront it is to do it, and the more we do it, the more we can increase our confidence in public speaking.
The main key to speaking in public with confidence is for you to know your material very well. The material you are going to be speaking about should be something that you are familiar with, and that you have a good deal of interest in. If you are interested in the subject matter you can forget you are talking to a group of people. Your passion for the subject, and your enthusiasm to share your knowledge on the subject, will enable you to approach public speaking with confidence.
When you want to show confidence in public speaking you should dress in a manner that looks professional, but is very comfortable for you. It will not increase your confidence level if you are standing at the podium in a pair of four inch heels that are pinching your feet. If you are uncomfortable physically you will start to speak faster, and you will not enunciate clearly, and the audience will be able to tell that something is wrong. So don’t go to your speaking engagement in sneakers and a sweat suit, but do go in something that allows you to be comfortable.
To improve your confidence in public speaking you should practice deep breathing exercises. Deep breathing exercises teach us to control our breathing, and they teach us to calm ourselves down. When we learn some of these techniques we can apply them when we feel ourselves letting public speaking fears enter our minds. We can use the exercise to push the anxiety of public speaking back, and allow the confidence in public speaking to emerge.
Another way for you to build confidence in public speaking is to tape yourself when you are speaking. Listen to the tape, and if you have done a video watch the tape. Notice how you stand, and do you sound plain and clear? Are you projecting your voice so that even those in the rear of the room might hear you clearly? By watching and listening to ourselves when we are speaking we can make adjustments that will create a confidence in public speaking for us. You know we are always more confident about performing tasks that we think we are good at. By critiquing ourselves we can become good.
You will improve your chances of speaking in public with confidence if you practice speaking out loud. Get some of your friends together and speak to them like you are addressing a crowd. Family works well as practice audiences also. The more you do things like this the more comfortable you become with addressing people. It is this feeling of comfort and familiarity that allows you to develop confidence in public speaking.
You have to remember that your biggest fear is that of making yourself look foolish. If you know the material you are speaking about, and you are comfortable enough physically to stand through the speech, then you have nothing to fear.
Let yourself connect with your audience just as if you were addressing your friends, or your congregation at church. You are intelligent, and articulate, there is no reason why you should not be capable of speaking in public with confidence.
Remember there is nothing for you to fear, breathe deeply and speak.
